How to Order Sets
After you have received the Arledge Measuring Kit, use the Arledge
tape measure.
Pull enough tape to equal the length of the piano and lock it.
Thread the tape from the front under any plate struts along the lowest
string towards the lowest hitch pin.
Carefully finesse the tape under the damper felt.
Place the tape measure eye around the hitch pin and gently pull the
slack.
The tape should run unobstructed along the length of the lowest string.
The tape measure will remain anchored on the respective hitch pin
of each string for the distance measurements.
Now that
you have printed the order form pages, you are ready to measure!
For the
lowest string measurements in the bass section:
1)
Measure from the hitch pin to the center of the speaking or
front bridge pin of the lowest string.

|
2 )
Measure from the hitch pin to the center of the agraffe of the
lowest string.
3) Measure from the hitch pin to the top of the tuning pin
of the lowest string.

Complete the measurements
by determining the diameter of the core and the overall diameter of
the wound portion of the string.
Use
a micrometer.

Enter these three length measurements and two diameter measurements
in the designated boxes next to lowest string number #1
note name A0 on Order Form Page 2.
Note Naming
Name notes with
note letter and octave number. Octave numbers change at every 'C'.
Only sharps are used.
EXAMPLE: Lowest note is A0, then A#0, B0, C1... Middle C=C4.
String Numbers
String numbers
count consecutively from lowest string number #1. Enter string measurements
in millimeters and ODs in inches decimal.
For the
next wound string measurement in the bass section:
Measure the highest unichord string in the bass section and enter
into the designated boxes on Order Form Page 2.
For most pianos you will measure only two more strings (lowest bichord
and highest bichord).
NOTE:
If wound strings are present in the tenor section measure each string
individually and enter dimensions on the TENOR FORM.

Next, you will need
the following:
Make
paper rubbings of the hitch pin/bridge pin area, and also the agraffe/tuning
pin area using
white fax or banner paper.

One rubbing
will highlight agraffes, tuning pins and strings.
The other rubbing will highlight hitch pins, bridge pins and strings.
The objective is to get an actual size image of these two areas.
Fax paper is usually wide enough for most small to medium pianos.
Banner paper which is available from office supply superstores can
be used when wider paper is needed.

Cut and tape the paper if necessary so it lays evenly
and securely over each area. Fewer wrinkles are better.
Highlight the white paper by rubbing it with carbon paper held under
your index finger.
Take care that the white paper does not move.
Rub lightly with the carbon paper while firmly securing the white
paper with the other hand.
If it slips, start over.

Rubbing of agraffes,
tuning pins and strings
On your two
rubbings, please clarify, highlight, number and circle if necessary
so that exact points and correct information is conveyed. Note how
the bichord agraffe for strings 10 and 11 is numbered.

Rubbing of hitch pins, bridge pins and strings
The two paper rubbings and string measurements are vital in determining
the fit of your strings.
So, make sure exact points for hitch pins, bridge pins, front and
back of agraffes and center of tuning pins can be determined.
Highlight with a pencil if necessary and number each respective point
as illustrated above.
Call for information on stock scales, spec/data sheets, full rubbings,
